On Monday the 7th of August, the year 7&8 of Hornby High School got given the opportunity to go and visit Orana wildlife park. Orana wildlife park is a zoo home to over 400 animals in Christchurch New Zealand. We started our day off with our instructor Elizabeth, talking to us about all the different animals they had at the park. Elizabeth first took us to see the Rhinoceros, there were 5 rhinos that I saw, they were big and strong. Elizabeth showed us a rhino's horn, she even let us touch it, it felt smooth but rough at the same time. Next Elizabeth took my group and me to see the fast cheaters. While we were walking to the cheaters, we came across the rainbow trout, All though we couldn’t see anything it was cool the park had them. We finally, got to see the cheaters they were cute but scary at the same time. After looking at the cheaters for awhile, we left and went to see New Zealand’s only gorillas. We walked into the gorillas home, there were three huge big gorillas, Fataki, Fuzu, and their half brother, Mahali. Our instructor Elizabeth brought us into the gorillas home and got us to nail down on our knees, we did this so that the gorillas didn’t feel threatened by us. While we were looking around one of the gorillas came up to the window and started looking at us, we all laughed happily, but we were also scared at the same time. We shouted because out of nowhere the older brother Fataki started to chase his brothers, It was funny but really terrifying. I think that the gorillas are just simply magnificent. After all the excitement my group went to feed the giraffes. We held a branch of leaves in our hands and then the giraffe came up at pulled it off with their tongue. Giraffes are so strong and tall and I think they are just amazing animals. It was about 12:30 which is lunch time, this is when everyone sat down and ate. At 1:00 my group and I walk down to see the lions, everyone was so shocked to see so many lions. There were about 8 lions we saw, they looked so cute because they were sleeping. A fact about lions is that the female lions are the primary hunters of the group. After seeing the lions we went to touch a stuff Kiwis feathers the feathers felt like human hair almost. Next, we went to the kiwi house, to see New Zealand’s national icon, the kiwi. It was pitch black in the kiwi house it was nearly impossible to see them, but after looking and looking we finally saw the two Kiwis. We didn't quite know what they were doing as they were in a corner close together. Did you know? The kiwi used their nostrils at the end of their beak to eat. The kiwi is also a flightless bird. We came out of the kiwi house and strolled down to see the tiger. It wasn't that exciting to see the tiger as it was sleeping, but it was awesome to see one in real life. A few minutes later we went to see the smart and intelligent keas, It was a bit scary in the Kea cage tho because there were mouses runny around. Elizabeth told us that the keas even found out how to escape the cage, the story was funny but very unique. The last animal we saw we the ugly but cute Tasmanian devils, to me they look like dogs but with really big sharp teeth. Out of all the animals we saw, I think that the Tasmanian devil was my favourite. It finally came to the end of the day, it felt so long. I learnt a lot of things about animals but I also saw a lot of animals I have not seen before. Overall I had an amazing animal adventurous day.

For the last 3 weeks, the year 7-9s were currently in the B&E
(Business and Enterprise) kete. This is where we get into groups of 3-4 people, we make and sell our own product to e.g (Students, Children, Adults.) My group (Food Enterprise) Ava, Tai, Liz and myself made 3 products to sell. The 1 st product was pizza rolls, which had a tortilla as the base, tomato paste and Edam cheese on top. Our second product was 2 types of cookies, we made heart shaped sugar cookies with chocolate icing, butter icing and raspberry flavour icing, we also had sprinkle for decoration, we also sold chocolate chip cookies. Our 3 product was 3 different flavours of raro the flavours were Sweet novel orange, blackcurrant, and mango orange. Something could have changed like the teachers could have made a kitchen schedule instead of a lot of people in the kitchen at once because some people had to clean up other people mess. They could have shopped at pak' n save instead of countdown as pak'n'save is cheaper. TBH I did not think that our product would have sold out, but I was so happy that all of our product did. I think that everything went well especially when people started to buy our product and compliment us on how our product looked. Overall It was fantastic and a very good day. It was so much fun to sell our product to people.

Ballon powered water fountain

What are the effects of air pressure/Balloon powered water fountain

For this experiment you will need:
Straw- longer than half your bottle,

One plastic bottle,

One balloon,

Water ( Just cold will do),

Food colouring (optional).

Hot glue gun,

Container- to contain the mess.

Method

M-Make sure you place down paper towels or newspaper to protect your surface.

N-Plug your hot glue gun into an outlet and let it heat up.

L- Grab your water bottle and cut a little hole where you'll be putting your straw in. (make sure the hole is 3/4 from the bottom).

L- Put the straw in the hole make sure it`s standing at an angle, then use hot glue to keep it in place. (make sure you put glue around the straw)

N-After the glue is done drying pour in your water.

M- Get your container and place it where the top of the straw is because that is where the water comes out.  

L-After that place your balloon over the open lid-this may take 3 people, then release holding the balloon and  watch the magic happen,

About the experiment:

So the air in the balloon is going down in the bottle which is forcing the water to go up and out of the straw, this happens by the air taking up space in the bottle which is why the water comes out of the straw.

Once the air has enough space it stops the water from coming out. By adding pressure to the balloon the water comes out faster. This is called acceleration.
